Doll with a goiter

  1. This is my first attempt at making a stuffed object that's supposed to look like something specific.
  2. The placement of the flower on the neck is unfortunate (someone thought it was a growth).
  3. The dress is made from hand-dyed fabric - by me!
  4. I came up with the way to sew on the yarn as hair after remembering an episode of America's Next Top Model in which several girls get hair weaves.

Soooo clearly I need some more practice with the sewing machine. Usually I do my stuffed objects by hand but this time I used a machine due to time constraints. I'm not an expert in any sense of the word. The pattern I made looked very different than this. Sigh.

My neice ("Squeaky" or "MeeMoo") liked it for about 5 seconds. It's okay, I didn't take it personally, she seems particularly attached to a little owl and also she isn't even two years old yet. Maybe, if it survives long enough, it will one day be the object of a hilarious conversation between two twelve-year-old girls, in which one of them (MeeMoo) says "I don't know, some weird doll my aunt made for me."

Ha!

It was fun, though!

Back from Boston, back to a busy three days and another three-day-chag. These marathon holidays are wearing me out!

Monster Corner

This part of the apartment is called "Monster Corner." Here we have Mr. Jefferson (far left) who is a sore loser at board games, underneath him are our stacking robots, our monster towel from Target, Lilly the art room assistant, Doug (red monster) who is a Canadian Zamboni driver, and Julie who has a false eye to deter predators from eating her head.

This is where most of the monsters in the apartment live, but not all...

Three characters

I have been doing some exploration in my art therapy sessions (I am seeing an art therapist) about the three "characters" at play in my life: The Hermit, The Alchemist, and The Chariot. So this is all three of those characters and what they look like in a stuffed sculpture. The three purple/blue/gray sticks are The Alchemist, the red donut is The Chariot, and the yellow circle is The Hermit.

I haven't processed this piece yet, though.

This is turning into a major body of work, actually, all of my characters. Neat :)

Self-care Stuffed Objects/Monsters

I started making felt stuffed objects/monsters in one of my classes as a self-care exercise. This was today's work:

From the front you can see a little pattern that, to me, symbolizes me with a bunch of pressure and stuff pushing down on me.

I decided to add cones to make it stand up like a table... no reason, just thought it would be interesting to sew on cones.

Then I turned it over and it kind of looks like a monster! One yellow eye, one peach eye, and an orange tail.

This monster is a little grouchy.

I love making these weird stuffed things! It's also fun to make sculptural pieces... this semester is all about the third dimension.
